Leather Sofa FAQs

Have a different question?
Speak to an expert today.
The amount of care your sofa will need depends on the type of leather used. Make sure to keep your leather couch out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources like radiators. When removing spills, avoid rubbing the liquid into the leather, as this will stain your sofa. For full details on how to keep your leather settee in the best condition possible, you can read our leather care guides.
While it’s an effective way to remove dirt from a leather sofa, certain types of leather aren’t suitable for steam cleaning, and care needs to be taken to use a low temperature. For any queries about whether your sofa is suitable to be steam cleaned, talk to one of our experts.
When choosing your perfect sofa, pay attention to the type of grain used, the quality of the stitching, and the look/smell. Real leather sofas shouldn’t smell or look plasticky, and depending on the type of leather used, will have an easily identifiable finish. The size of your leather sofa will also affect its price, so be sure to consult our sofa measuring guide to ensure you buy the right fit for your room.
There are a variety of finishes available for leather sofa sets, which all have their own unique traits. Here are some of the types of leather sofas for sale:

Sauvage and aniline leather

Typically the most expensive type of leather, sauvage or aniline leather has very little protective coating, or none at all. It requires plenty of care to ensure its quality but has a luxurious feel that moulds to the shape of your body. For a high-end 100% leather sofa, it’s a long-term investment in quality comfort.

Seasoned leather

Seasoned leather has been treated for a unique look and feel, as well as added protection. Examples of seasoned leather finishes include nubuck (which offers a plush, velvet-like feel), semi-aniline (which emulates real aniline with extra protection), and suede.

Waxed/oiled leather

This leather has been buffed slightly, raising the fibres on its surface. Wax or oil is then applied for a waxy, gloss finish.
When choosing between a  leather or fabric sofa, leather options are typically better for longevity. With the right amount of care, a real leather sofa can last upwards of 20 years. Be sure to regularly clean your sofa, remove any dust or debris, and plump your cushions often for a soft leather sofa that can stand the test of time.
When your leather sofa arrives, applying an appropriate leather protector can prevent damage from a range of possible hazards. Be sure to regularly turn any reversible cushions, and avoid sitting on their edges, as this can cause uneven wear and affect your cushion fillings. Keep sharp objects, pets, and lively kids away from a new leather sofa, as they can damage the material used.
